This solid waste disposal facility is located in a sensitive area, with a shallow aquifer near lakes and wetlands. After the first Retriever unit was disabled by a direct lightning strike, a lightning-protected modified design (available as an option) has delivered 18 months of continuous service, uninterrupted by 3 hurricanes – including Wilma – and 5 days of power outages. The blackout shut down the leachate pumps but didn’t stop the solar-powered Retriever from collecting and reporting its data every day on schedule.

In this case, the daily data stream helped coordinate emergency response efforts by showing that, despite the pump shutdown and heavy precipitation, leachate levels didn’t spike but rose slowly. Portable generators were moved from cell to cell to power pumps where rising levels were of most concern.
